Abstract
This panel focuses on a variety of nontraditional user interfaces that have been devel- oped by commercial vendors of complex computer systems to bridge the gap between their systems and the information stored in various commercial DBMS%. Many of these inter- faces, linking the database to such tools as decision support systems, expert systems, and hypertext systems, to name a few, are quite sophisticated and in many cases have been developed outside of the database research community. Panelists will discuss the design and implementation of their interfaces, highlighting any special considerations and prob- lems that had to be addressed to meet the needs of their applications and their users, and will illustrate the actual use of their systems through a variety of audio-visual media.
