Abstract
Computerization enables us to model the world ever more closely and finely. Exceptions become routine and can be handled automatically as part of the normal order of things. In the same way, data models become more complex and irregular as they match the real world ever more closely. A primary goal of data modelling is to discern and represent the underlying patterns and regularities of seemingly unstructured information so that it can be manipulated electronically in powerful and useful ways.
