The ITCIS Database (Integrated Telephone Customer Information System) was designed and developed to support multiple real-time and batch applications connected with customer services for the Netherlands Post, Telephone, and Telegraph Service (PIT). All software components are operational and the system is partially implemented. Current effort is involved with the remaining implementation, incorporating changes due to user requests and tuning.
High volume throughput and recovery capability were the dominant requirements associated with the development and, as such, exerted the most influence on the database structure. The first objective of this paper is to present this structure. A secondary objective is to share some enlightening experiences which occurred during the testing phases. Close monitoring was maintained on program performance, which led to subsequent program alternations, often producing suprising inprovements.
