Abstract

Relational databases are widely used for end-user computing or developing new business functions. However, most applications with very large databases still need hierarchical or network database systems because companies which have already made significant investments wish them to be protected. Although the transition from one database system generation to the next isimportant, few promising migration strategies exist. This paper reviews and describes three of them: data and code conversion to assist present applications in running entirely on new generation database technology; language transformation to map one database language to another; and finally, data propagation to maintain the consistency between databases of different systems. The discussion of the pros and cons of these migration alternatives will give the practitioner and the researcher more insight for future work.
