SAP-bashing is a favorite activity in the database community: after all SAP is a big and very successful company that chooses not to use much of the functionality so many of us have worked so hard to build into databases. Yet here is a gem of a paper written by authors from SAP.
Drawing upon their experience in building data warehouses, the authors list desiderata for any of us database types thinking about warehouse architecture. It is a rare industrial paper that successfully identifies a good research problem -- the problem must be abstracted enough and stated succinctly and the problem must probably be solvable with reasonable effort. This paper has a half a dozen. Students looking for Ph. D. topics -- here is gold.
