Overview

========================================================================

The theme for the VLDB Summer School is « Data Management in the Cloud ». The four-day event will take place from 23-26 of July 2024 in Cluj-Napoca, the heart of the Transylvania region of Romania. The lectures will be given by outstanding international speakers from both academia and industry. Topics range from the design principles behind data-intensive applications in the Cloud, through Data Integration, down to the underlying hardware resources of Cloud machines and how Databases can take advantage of these, to offer efficient query processing. The Summer School aims to educate early-stage research students on these topics, as well as to provide them with many opportunities to network in a friendly, collegial, setting with each other and with the expert speakers at the event.

The Summer School will take place at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. It will consist of tutorials covering foundational aspects of Data Management in the Cloud, research talks on state-of-the-art research projects and future challenges, and a Poster Session. In the Poster Session participants will have a chance to showcase their Phd/Postdoc research topic and results (or Master’s thesis topic, if they are still in the Master’s degree), and get early feedback.

Registration Fees

========================================================================

The Summer School has two types of participation fees: Full (€450) and Reduced (€100).

The participation fee includes coffee breaks, lunch, and dinner served all throughout the event.

There is only a limited supply of Reduced Fee registrations available for students studying in Eastern Europe or in non-High-Income Country (according to the World Bank classification). Self-financed students from High-Income Countries may apply for the Reduced Fee as well, but we reserve the right to “convert” the applications to Full Fee.

In addition to the participation fee, the selected participants are expected to pay for their lodging and travel expenses to Cluj-Napoca. The city has many hotels and guesthouses for different budgets; we estimate per-night costs to be in the range of 60€-130€. For those eligible for a reduced fee, a limited number of student dormitory rooms will be made available.
