VLDB'98 |
For 24 years, VLDB has served the database community as its primary truly international conference. The current trend in VLDB is towards a forum where researchers and practitioners exchange ideas and experiences, with excellent quality ensured by rigorous refereeing. The VLDB '98 conference will continue and strengthen this trend.
We invite you to submit papers reporting recent research results in the general field of databases. Starting in 1998 the VLDB research paper track will be divided into three sections. The regular section is for standard research papers. To stimulate new research directions, a separate vision section is introduced for papers on speculative and futuristic topics. A third experience section will promote papers describing novel and challenging database system implementation aspects or novel applications of database technology. In addition to the research track, there will be an industrial track, as well as panels, tutorials, and exhibits.
Since the conference will take place in New York City, we are
especially interested in papers, tutorials, panels, and exhibits that may
be of interest to the financial community.
Topics
of Interest
The topics of interest in VLDB '98 include but are not limited to:
Active Databases
Authorization and Security Concurrency Control and Recovery DBMS Architectures Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery Data Models and Database Design Data Warehousing Database Benchmarks Database Constraint Management Database Evolution and Migration Database Languages Databases and Electronic Commerce Engineering Databases Financial Applications of Databases Heterogeneous and Federated Databases Interaction Between Database and IR Systems Internet/Intranet Services and Databases Knowledge Base Management Systems |

Regular Section
The industrial track encourages submission of short papers from industry to report on new developments in DBMS technology. Papers should describe experiences using or developing database management systems, or issues arising from handling large volumes of data in an industrial setting. Positive or negative advice that will help researchers or practitioners is particularly welcome.
Six copies of your paper must be submitted to the Industrial Program
Committee Chair representing the geographic region of the first author's
current address (see where to send your submission)
by February 23, 1988. In addition, an abstract of the paper must be emailed
to the same Chair by February 16, 1998. Submitted papers should not exceed
4 pages, double-spaced and typeset with minimum 11 point font; over-length
papers may be rejected without review.
Panel
Proposals
Panels proposals should address exciting, new and controversial issues
and must be debate-oriented rather than a series of short presentations.
They should pose specific questions that the panelists will be called to
answer, and they should indicate what the controversy around those questions
is. A list of confirmed participants with their affiliations should
be included in the panel proposal. Proposals should be submitted to any
one of the two panel program co-chairs by
email or in hard-copy by February 23, 1998.
Tutorial
Proposals
Tutorial proposals must clearly identify the intended audience, which
should be considerably broader than the database research community. Enough
material should be included in the proposal to provide a sense of both
the scope of material to be covered and the depth to which it will be covered.
There are no limits on the length of the tutorial proposal. The intended
length of the tutorial (1.5 or 3 hours) should be indicated. Proposals
should be submitted to the tutorial program chair
by email or in hard-copy by February 23, 1998.
Industrial
Exhibits Proposals
VLDB'98 plans to showcase exhibits from the industry. The exhibits should
include demos illustrating innovative technology, features and implementations
of database systems or database applications. Exhibits may be linked to
presentations in other tracks. To propose your participation in the exhibits
program contact by email any of the two exhibits
program co-chairs or send them a short (few paragraphs)
description by May 1, 1998.
All deadlines are firm. There will be no grace period.
