Social ProgrammeVLDB'99 Reception - Tuesday 7th September 1999There will be a welcome reception in the Strathblane Hall of the EICC. This will be an opportunity for delegates to meet in an informal atmosphere.Scottish Evening - Wednesday 8th SeptemberThis will be held in the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh's famous Georgian New Town. Participants will be able to see one of the ballrooms in which the famous gathered to dance and converse at the time of Edinburgh's literary greatness in the late seventeenth/early eighteenth century. Delegates will experience a Scottish Evening in the elegant surroundings of the Assembly Rooms in George Street.We will enjoy Scottish food, drink and entertainment. A chance to sample the delights of Scottish cuisine including the famous and unique haggis (which will be addressed in traditional style), Scottish beer and whisky, coupled with appropriate entertainment - ceilidh dancing, piping, clarsach playing (Celtic harps) and singing. Participation will be encouraged in the drinking, eating and dancing. For those who do not want to dance there are withdrawing rooms where people can sit and converse. Conference Banquet - Thursday 9th SeptemberThe conference banquet will take place in the Great Hall of the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh's city centre. This is Scotland's premier museum housing an international collection of artefacts. Before the banquet delegates will be able to visit the adjacent recently opened Museum of Scotland. It is an exciting museum with a modern architecture and exhibits showing the development and history of the Scottish nation. The displays use many innovative and modern techniques. It is an experience not to be missed and will contrast with the Victorian architecture of the Great Hall where delegates will sit for the banquet.
